KLAS recently released information from a new study about the EMR selection process. More than one third of current EMR software users are considering replacing their systems, and releasing EMR Request For Proposals through ChartZoom. This is significant as it may mean the wide EMR vendor market may begin to whittle down to a few big dogs over the next few years.
Already a hot market, ambulatory EMR sales – both first-time and replacement – have shot up again over the last year, and though options are more plentiful than ever, health care providers are leaning toward the tried-and-true, according to a new report by KLAS.
For the new report, Ambulatory EMR: Win Rates, Replacements, and Provider Loyalty, KLAS conducted nearly 400 provider interviews to identify the ambulatory market’s purchasing trends and interest in various EMR products. A key trend, according to the report, the rate of ambulatory EMR replacement has accelerated over the last year.
According to the report, health care professionals are turning to vendors they perceive as enduring and stable. Allscripts, eClinicalWorks, Epic and NextGen represent the best-known and most considered vendors in this study.
It will be interesting to see if the “interest” leads to conversions. Migrating from one EMR platform to another is quite the undertaking, especially considering that no EMR vendors seem to promote of assist you in getting your data out, after you’ve bought in. Here’s another note on the findings from the study, showing Allscripts, Epic, and NextGen in the lead.
In Ambulatory EMR: Win Rates, Replacements, and Provider Loyalty, the most popular vendor was Allscripts, considered in 16 percent of deals; it was followed by Epic (12 percent) and NextGen (10 percent). This report also highlights AdvancedMD, athenahealth, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, e-MDs, GE Healthcare, Greenway, McKesson and Sage.

First, tell us what you are looking for by answering these questions:
Is it time to look at replacing paper charts with EMR software in your clinic?
There are federal incentives in place for the next few years to try to encourage this adoption. Patients are expecting their doctors to be sharing information electronically with other practices in town. And from a disaster standpoint, providers find that their data is better protected in digital format.
Software Advice shared their ten best practices for selecting an EMR system, and below is an excerpt:
Take ownership of the decision. Your EMR software will impact how you practice medicine, so this is not a process that should be delegated to back-office staff or the local “computer guy.” While your staff should play a key role in the EMR selection process and the EMR RFP, this process demands medical expertise and leadership that only the physician can provide…
Determine your own requirements. Too many physicians let software salesmen drive the selection process. Only you know how you should practice medicine. Therefore, it’s critical to map out your ideal workflow and how you interact with office staff to complete a patient visit. Do you want to limit the system to electronic charting, or do you want and end-to-end solution that extends all the way to claim management? At the same time, realize that your interactions with software vendors are good opportunities to learn new best practices and workflows that could improve the way you work. ..

We are collecting more information and looking forward to the final rule for meaningful use certified EHR requirements. However, we’ve heard time and time again that this should not cause us to rush and implement a system.
The cost of doing an electronic health records implementation incorrectly is far greater than the stimulus dollars awarded for compliance.
Take your time.
Use the form below to start; it is important to note your specialty and practice size to ensure you receive helpful results. You will be connected with local EMR vendors who can provide you with cost information and give you specific details for comparison.
