The ARRA incentives from the federal government are an excellent reward for utilizing EMR software in your practice. Considerations for these requirements should certainly inform your EMR RFP. However, there is the danger that many organizations will rush to secure and implement an electronic health records system, neglecting the due diligence recommended for such an integral part of their operations.

* What is your plan for implementation? This plan should be thorough! Beware of vendors who don’t offer a detailed EMR implementation plan. Even the most basic systems require a plan.

* What is the process for fixing bugs and launching upgrades/new versions to the EMR system? Every system will have bugs. Be less concerned about bugs and more concerned about how those issues are resolved.

Obviously, a current requirement would now be Meaningful Use compliance. At time of publishing, the final rule is still not available. However, EMR vendors realize that this is a high priority, and they should be able to adequately account how they will help you meet each objective.
